Why I wrote this book
I wrote Walk in My Shoes because I care deeply about others and our world, and I am afraid for our future. But, too, I am hopeful as the hand draws closer to midnight. Many of us feel hurt, alone, and distanced from others. In our neighborhoods, communities, and cities, distrust is fertilized by global angst and personal fear. Fractured by political division and our inability and lack of will to hear different points of view, our society is on the brink, wobbling.
I wrote Walk in My Shoes to stimulate conversation and understanding that might lead to more just outcomes, healing, and stability. |
I wrote Walk in My Shoes because I want to emphasize the message that kindness matters—encouraging each one of us to become more comfortable in our own shoes, step-up our courage and grace, and reach out to make our world a more equitable place for family, neighbor, and those whom we’ll never meet.
As you read Walk in My Shoes, ask yourself: Am I ready to engage in deliberate acts of kindness? Am I ready to feel more comfortable and confident in my own shoes? How can I step into another’s shoes, imagining what this moment or daily life is like for them? |
Storytellers range in age from early 20s to mid-90s and all have generously shared their most intimate thoughts:
Through attending AA meetings, I learned to appreciate what others go through in their lives.
~ Barry Wishnow I have bipolar illness and that’s a big reason why I have compassion for others. ~ Julie Marie Hoey In a world with so many wars and a compromised environment, my goal is to help people become more deliberate about the way they live.
~ Dr. Lloyd Sheldon Johnson I taught my children compassion and empathy was through caring for pets. I would also give voice to the animal’s needs, ‘I’m hungry, please feed me.’
~ Maureen Albano I have to be careful in the empathy department. I want to fix it all, everything. I need to remind myself to find my little spaces and just do what I can.
~ Bart Hill Fear of the other gets in the way of compassion.
